Our Take on the SkillsFuture for Digital Workplace Initiative

The SkillsFuture for Digital Workplace initiative was launched by the Minister for Education, Ong Ye Kung on 5 October 2017. The programme aims to train over 100,000 Singaporeans over the next three years in basic digital skills to help them adapt to a changing workplace.

The courses under the programme include interpreting and using data, adopting work productivity tools, and navigating common applications in areas such as e-payment, food delivery and transportation.

We are honoured to be given the opportunity to contribute to an article on CIPD, sharing in particular our views on the initiative and the skills required for Singaporeans to succeed in a digital economy.

Whilst the initiative’s focus on highly specialised areas would facilitate development in the highly technical and domain research, our Managing Director Evelyn Chow also highlighted that the limitations on the type of courses could potentially develop students into subject matter experts in very narrow disciplines.

“As technology levels the playing field, individuals who excel and who will have a higher chance of success will be those who have courage, resilience, emotional intelligence, cultural intelligence, integrity and the ability to lead people to attempt seemingly impossible feats.

“Singapore does not want to produce a nation of robots, but young people who are passionate about new ideas, are creative and possess the commercial savviness to navigate a very dynamic international business environment,” she added.
