For most companies, the end of the year is a busy period, with many taking turns to clear leave while fitting in business reviews, strategy discussions and planning meetings.

However, it is also a time for reflection, appreciation and bonding. So amid our hectic schedules, the DecodeHR team took off for a two-day retreat in Batam at the end of November.

We enjoyed sumptuous meals, indulged in shopping and pampered ourselves at a spa. It was a much-needed respite from work and family commitments. More importantly, it provided us with valuable time to relax, let our hair down and get to know one another better.

The team also took the opportunity to spread some festive cheer by visiting an orphanage, run by House of Shalom (HOS).

The children, aged between 5 and 20, welcomed us warmly with hymns and we were moved by their rousing and joyful singing.

We engaged in origami activities and everyone had fun making a variety of crafts, including finger puppets, reindeer headbands and Christmas trees. We were impressed by how cooperative and gracious the children were, with the older ones often lending a helping hand to their younger friends. We bade a fond farewell to them after enjoying dinner together.

Founded in 2009, the non-profit Christian registered charity organisation operates three children’s homes – two in Indonesia (Batam and Medan) and one in the Philippines. There are about 100 children in these homes. HOS also helps 24 children and youths, who live in their own homes, with their educational and social needs.

The visit was certainly one of the highlights of the trip, said Kathleen Liew, DecodeHR’s Accounts and Payroll Consultant. “I loved seeing the children’s cheerful smiles and really enjoyed their passionate singing.”

For Devi Pillai, our Engagement Manager who just joined the firm in July, the retreat was an enriching experience and gave her the chance to mingle with everyone.

“Through this trip, I learned a lot from each of my team members, who are accommodating, caring, encouraging and always put others’ interests above their own. I feel blessed to be part of such an incredible team!”
