The world is a global village and we are all well-connected inhabitants of it. In this age of rampant digitization, we take connectivity and collaboration as given. With inception dating back to 1971, as collaborative technologies are more readily available, we have been under the impression that their mere existence would ensure effective communication among dispersed teams.

Then comes a virus whose effects are far more outreaching than just healthcare. The COVID-19 outbreak has brought forth some very interesting gaps. It turns out that the actual performance of these sophisticated communication tools depends on how we use these technologies. Virtual communication behavior is important for successful collaboration.

Proper matching of technology with the nature of the task in hand, clear expression of intentions to avoid misinterpretation, being responsive, supportive, open and inclusive and staying in sync with the larger group are some of the best practices for organizations to improve performance.

Leadership must create a team charter that answers most of the frequently asked questions in this space. This document can guide employees in early and smooth adoption of collaboration tools. Members with prior experience in such tools can be used to model effective behavior and help raise the whole group to a higher standard.

Changing times call for swift action. Technology is only as good as its implementation. Coordinated efforts of employees across levels will help organizations remain relevant in these uncertain times.
